Report from Rodney Mantle
Language Show Live
“Language Teachers Together! Show and Tell”
ALL London Branch, Saturday, 18 October 2014
A Report by Rodney Mantle
Six o’clock was the closing time for the Language Show Live that day, but that did not deter over 150 people from turning up at 4:45 for this event.
No fewer than 14 teachers volunteered to tell the audience in a very short space of time about their best ideas, ranging from non-IT items such as a book bazaar in the target language, with native speakers reading texts through packs of vocabulary cards including connectives, which enabled complete beginners to produce complex sentences within a few weeks to online post-it notes using padlet.com .
Most of the items were French, but a lively presentation of videos about Italian, showing how gestures and body language could be used for language teaching, raised much laughter, as did a team game in Japanese involving reading and speaking simple sentences in Roman script, then answering appropriate questions in English without looking at the screen/board, but with the help of other team members. This had proved an effective antidote to speaking inhibitions.
Helen Myers, Ashcombe School, the Chair of the London Branch led the event and made an eloquent case for membership of the ALL, followed by a ringing endorsement from Prim Herridge of the ALL committee as “the best staffroom, without any cynics”.
Joe Dale, the IT guru for MFL and EFL, introduced the newest version of LINGUANET on tinyurl.com/linguanet.org
After the Show and Tell session, almost everyone adjourned to the Hand & Flower, where drinks were generously sponsored by Vocab Express and the room and nibbles by Linguascope. The chat was delightfully interrupted by a quiz on Europe and live music from the talented John Connor.

The Language Show
http://www.languageshowlive.co.uk/Content/Welcome-to-Language-Show-Connect-Home attracts many people from all over the country,
including many teachers. It is free
and this year it is being held at Olympia Central from Friday 17th October to
Sunday 19th October 2014.
It seems a nice opportunity to meet up
informally and share ideas, so on behalf of ALL London,
Joe Dale
and Helen Myers are hosting a Show and Tell during
the show (Saturday 4.45 – 5.45 Room 3). During
this session, you can offer to come to the front and share a teaching tip for a
few minutes. If you need to show
anything via the laptop, please bring it on a stick or bring a web address
written out so that we can type it in while you start your introduction.
We fit everyone in - you write your name and topic on a slip of paper and
we divide up the time.
We know that language teachers like to
carry on talking and people may just want to have somewhere to go for a quick
drink and a chat before they hit the town (or the train home) later, so we have
organised a social event
straight afterwards, taking place in a function room right opposite the
exhibition venue.
We hope you can make it to both events!
