WHAT IS TiLT?

TiLT (Technology in Language Teaching) is a conference for language teachers interested in embedding technology in their lessons. Joe Dale initiated the idea of an annual ML tech conference [ILILC] and ALL London, The Ashcombe School and Linguascope are delighted to support the continuation of this tradition!

TIMING

The final programme will be available closer to the event.

Registration will open at 9:30am and the conference will start at 10am. After an opening plenary from 10 – 10:30 when our own IT guru Joe Dale will kick-start the conference , there will be four one-hour slots [10.35 – 11.35; 12.15 – 1.15; 2.20 – 3.20 ; 3.25 – 4.25] , each with a choice of three or four sessions.

We will do our best to ensure that there is something for everybody in each of the four slots, whatever the language, and whatever the sector.

SHOW AND TELL

From 4.45 there is an opportunity for all to share ideas, techie or non-techie, at a relaxed ‘show and tell’ when we eat up the leftovers from lunch and get a take-away pizza if needed! We usually end at about 6. Those who are staying on tend to drift to a pub in the evening.

REFRESHMENTS

Coffee/tea and nice biscuits will be available on arrival and in the morning break [11.35 – 12.15], then a lovely buffet lunch will be laid on for you before the last two sessions [1.15 – 2.15]. All courtesy of Linguascope!

TICKETLESS ADMISSION

For simplicity’s sake, we don’t issue any ‘tickets’ and you don’t need to bring any confirmation, email printouts or receipts with you on the day. We will have you name at the registration desk and we will simply tick it off on our list.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE

To help make sessions more interactive, we encourage you to bring a tablet or laptop. It will allow you to take notes, try out resources as they are being shown by speakers, and share your thoughts and ideas on social media. Wi-Fi will be available and you will be given a personal login at registration.

THE VENUE

The event is taking place at the Ashcombe School (Bradley Building, Ashcombe Road, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 1LY). If coming by train (a 50 minutes’ journey from London Waterloo or Victoria), the school is only a 3-minute walk from the station).

If travelling by car, please access the school via the Croft Avenue entrance (directly off the A24, opposite Dorking station) and park on the signed court area (free parking).

If travelling from further away, the school is 25 minutes away from Gatwick airport (direct train route).

DIETARY REQUIRMENTS?

If you have specific dietary requirements (apart from vegetarian), please advise us ASAP by dropping us an email.

ACCOMMODATION

There is a variety of accommodation available nearby, for example the Travelodge, the Mercure White Horse and the Lincoln Arms which is across the road from the school. There are links to accommodation on the Dorking Tourist site. Groups may find it cheaper to book with Airbnb or House Trip. As the school is immediately opposite Dorking main station and Dorking Deepdene, it would be easy to commute from stations on the same line – e.g. Leatherhead, Reigate, Redhill, Guildford.

The founder of our annual conference will kick-start the day with his top tips for all!

2. Jane Basnett: How to sharpen your Microsoft tools for teaching and learning!

Jane has built up an enormous amount of knowledge about how to use Microsoft for the classsroom, shares widely on Twitter and we are delighted to welcome her here for the first time.

Exploring using Flipgrid for speaking homeworks and video feedback.

4. Sanako: David Binns and Stephen Blackie: Let technology take the strain in MFL!
A brief demonstration of how the advanced Finnish Educational System uses enhanced technology to maximise teacher/student time in MFL lessons. Additionally we would like feedback on the new developments we have coming along with ideas for products which language teachers would find useful

David will introduce way in which you can let technology take the strain as you prepare pupils for exams, including:

maximising the amount of speaking/listening time for the teacher student relationship in dwindling lesson times
Independent question and answer sessions using automatic voice insert
Saving time on oral assessment practice by doing the whole class simultaneously
Whole class simultaneous picture/image description activity and file collect with student names for assessment
Role play activities and audio collection

5. Joe Dale: New Techy Tips and Tricks to get Students Talking and Listening

You will play the pupil in this session where Joe will involve you in creating photo stories, podcasts and creative animations together. We look forward to the seeing the results!

This practical presentation will run through some quick and easy ways of integrating technology into the language classroom to enhance teaching and learning. Ideas will include cross-platform apps and web tools for making personalised narrated photo stories, classroom podcasts and creative animations amongst other themes. Each app or web tool will be showcased and there will be the opportunity for audience participation too!

6. Joe Dale: Practical classroom podcasting using Anchor

Learn how to create a podcast collaboratively with others. Practise with Joe, then get creative with your own class, thanks to a step-by-step guide . Bring your own device pre-loaded with the Anchor app[ or use the webtool

A demonstration of how to create a podcast where delegates will have an opportunity to share their voices in an episode. By the end of the session you will have a step-by-step guide on how to do this with your own class.

7. Paco Fernandez: Harness the power of music!

Another welcome ‘first-timer’ for our conference, Paco will share apps and ideas for making the most of songs. Experience how the elements of music – melody, rhythm, repetition – make language even more memorable and enjoyable.

In this session, Paco will be exploring 4 music-based apps: Lyrics Gaps, where homework can be set by selecting specific songs for students to listen to at home, which also allows teachers to track students’ progress; Lyrics Translate, containing the biggest song database, offering easy and practical ways to create gap-fills; Lyrics Translate, which can be used to promote independent and creative writing and Genius/Musixmatch, which supports the addition of real-time lyrics on Spotify on phones and tablets

Bio: Paco Fernandez is a primary and secondary MFL Teacher and Lead Practitioner currently working for the Cam Academy Trust. His area of research revolves around the link between music and memory in language learning. He is about to embark on a PhD project entitled “Monitoring second-language learners’ out-of-school exposure through online music streaming services and music-based language-learning apps”.

8. Ceri James: Formative assessment
Ceri is back again, brimming with ideas to make the most of technology for targeted assessment. Prepare to be bowled over by the sheer number of apps she recommends!

9. Ceri James: Google
Ceri will share her experience of using Google classroom effectively and efficiently to maximise her students’ learning.

10. James Gardner-Martin: Making the most of Quizlet and Google!

Having worked in the Edutech sector and as a Quizlet teacher ambassador working in a Google school, James is in a great position to share technology which helps you to streamline your work efficiently and effectively.

In this session, he will show you how to make the most of Quizlet’s various features including quick importing of vocabulary lists. He will also show you how to use Google Classroom to conduct speaking assessments, create self-marking multiple choice quizzes and why you don’t need a paper planner and mark book any more.

Bio: James is a former head of department in Eastbourne and took a year out of teaching recently to work in the Ed-tech sector. He’s now at Steyning Grammar School as teacher of French and Spanish and Head of Year 13.Steyning Grammar School – Lead KS4 MFL

11. Julia Morris: Escape! How to create ‘Escape-room’ -style language lessons.

Following her very popular session last year, we have asked Julia to present on this topic again. Benefit from this exciting and motivating experience both from the learner and teacher point of view.

Find out how to use Google forms and sites to make “Escape Room”- style language lessons. Play the game together, then find out how to create them.

12. Julia Morris: “Teacher Hacks for Office”
Julia will share a wealth of ideas to help save teacher time and to support learners .

This session will introduce a lot of quick ideas how to save time with everyday tasks in office and we will have a look at how immersive reader in Word/OneNote can be used in languages to help both students with dyslexia as well as A Level students to work on a text independently.

13. Esmeralda Salgado: ‘My favourite IT Things’.

The effervescent Esmeralda will share a comprehensive range of activities covering vocabulary, grammar, all 4 skills as well as promoting cultural activities.

Esmeralada will share “some of her favourite IT things” for the MFL classroom which will cover all attainment targets and vocabulary learning.
• Memrise and Quizlet linked to Sentence Builders to memorise vocabulary.
• Use of Padlet for collaborative international work, interactive homework or Study Guides,
• wheelofgames for translation, oral work or conjugation of verbs,
• Flipgrid for oral work, learningapps.org to design interactive activities and of course,
• use of QRcodes to give oral feedback and carry out treasure hunts.
She will also talk about etwinning collaboration with partner schools.

Everything exposed will be practical ideas, involving all skills, that can be used straight way in the classroom and which will involve between 5 to 15 minutes preparation time for the teacher! Minimum preparation and high impact resources!

Esmeralda is Head of MFL and Spanish at King’s Ely, in Cambridgeshire and responsible for the MFL Erasmus programme in her school. She is passionate about “taking languages outside the classroom ” and making the learning of MFL a skill for life in students, for which IT represents the perfect vehicle! Previously to her current position, she was an Advanced Skilled Teacher for Medway and Head of Spanish at Chatham Grammar school for Girls.

14. Domini Stone and Lorna Price: Introduction to The German Quiz Challenge: A free online assessment tool for Secondary Schools

A must for German teachers! The Goethe-Institut presents its new app for language assessment in an interactive session.

Are your pupils learning German? Are they aged between 13 and 16? Then check out the GERMAN QUIZ CHALLENGE! Come with us to Munich and meet five young skateboarders who will help test your students, whilst learning about a wide range of topics from the environment to the alternative music scene. This online application assesses your pupils’ abilities in reading, listening and writing and all without a minute’s marking. Domini Stone, Manager for Educational Links at the Goethe-Institut London will lead a session together with Lorna Price, Project Assistant in the Educational Links Department, and test your knowledge of German, whilst offering advice and ideas on how to integrate this application into the curriculum.

Bio: Domini Stone
Domini is Manager for Educational Links at the Goethe-Institut London. Domini’s own German journey began 30 years ago when a school exchange to the Rhineland sparked an interest in the language and culture. She went on to do a German degree at Leeds University and an enjoyable third year abroad in Berlin, as a language assistant, inspired her to become a German teacher, in West Yorkshire. In her most recent role, Domini managed a programme of courses and activities for language teachers, under the Network for Languages programme, at the University of Westminster. Domini enjoys working together with schools and partner organisations, to promote the German language and culture.

15. Laura Simons & Adam Vickery: ‘Engaging ways to revise’.

Our famously engaged couple will delight us with a range of ideas to engage your pupils in the revision process. An ideal session for this time of year! Prepare to leave enthused!

Hear about interactive games which can be created by teachers using for example Seneca, Gimkit, Textivate and Teachvid – then try them out!

Bio: Costantino Panza is an Italian software engineer specialising in video games, smartphone applications and interactive installations. He joined Linguascope in 2012 to support and expand the technical team. Combining his creativity and technical skills, he aims at creating cutting edge games. He is also a keen musician who can be found in London clubs singing and playing his guitar!

Bio: Richard West-Soley
Richard West-Soley studied German and Spanish at Oxford before a PGCE at Birmingham. He joined the team in 2002 to launch versions in those languages. Richard is an avid polyglot who currently fills his spare hours with Icelandic, Norwegian and Polish, and writes about all aspects of language learning at Polyglossic.com. He is a passionate advocate of lifelong learning, completing a second degree in Social Sciences with the OU in 2015. A keen pianist, he uses music to unwind after a hard day’s language learning!
